The DLC Investigation
The average cost of an in-game microtransaction, by game
Judging from the data we collected, the average price for an in-game item is £4.01, and if taken as a baseline for what people are happy to pay, we can clearly see that WoW (£11 average) and EVE (£17 average) cost massively more than the average . Plus, they charge subscription fees on top of this, creating extra recurring costs for players.
What's really astonishing, however, is that none of the items available in either EVE or WoW do
anything, or they replicate the functions of other items you have already.
The average cost across all the games is ultimately a bit of a misleading figure however, as it's thrown by the wildly varying prices within each individual game. The cheapest item in Blizzard's World of Warcraft, for example, still manages to cost more than the most expensive items in either Realm of the Mad God or Team Fortress 2.
For a more complete understanding of the prices, it's best to look at the prices of all the items individually...
The ABCs of DLC -
The total price of everything put together in just these seven games is a whopping £3,229.30.
